Quick Facts

Tony Smoragiewicz’ interest in running was sparked by his elementary school physical education teacher. This was also when he began competing in triathlons. Smoragiewicz grew up in Rapid City, S.D., the same hometown as fellow triathlete, Tamara Gorman. He continued racing through middle school and into high school. In high school, Smoragiewicz was a four-time South Dakota state champion in track and cross country events. He then ran collegiately at the NCAA Division I level for the University of Michigan. After taking a break from Triathlon to run for Michigan, he returned and began competing as an elite triathlete in March 2017. Smoragiewicz is currently a member of the USA Triathlon Olympic Development Team. His family also has a history of competing in college athletics. His father was a swimmer at the University of Maine, and his brother was a swimmer at South Dakota State University.
