Assistant Bobsled Coach

As an assistant bobsled coach with USA Bobsled & Skeleton, Mike Kohn is responsible for leading, managing and mentoring the National Team athletes, as well as effectively and proactively communicate with all USABS constituents, including athletes, USABS staff and partners. Kohn is also responsible for recruiting, as well as introducing and integrating new athletes into the USABS system. He is required to provide discipline, motivation, guidance and empathy to athletes at all levels from rookies up to and including Olympic medalists. Furthermore, he must provide continuous feedback and coaching to pilots and brakemen, ensuring each athlete exceedes his/her goals and expectations for the season. Kohn also must understand team selection criteria, the policies and procedures of the USABS Athlete Handbook, the organization's bylaws, professional code, and maintain a working relationship with the USABS and its constituents.

Mike Kohn is a 1st Lt. in the Virginia Army National Guard and a former member of the National Guard Outstanding Athlete Program. Kohn joined the National Guard in 1999 as an Infantry Soldier, and is one of several U.S. Olympic bobsled-soldier athletes that have benefited from the Outstanding Athlete Program. Kohn began the sport of bobsled during his senior year in High School when Coach Carlino wrote him a letter on June 6, 1990 welcoming him to the team. Kohn was the youngest competitor in the 1991 Olympic Trials, and went on to win the 2002 Olympic four-man bronze medal with driver and current USABS bobsled coach, Brian Shimer. Kohn was also named to the 2006 Olympic team as an alternate, and competed in the 2010 Olympics as a driver. He retired following the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games.

Mike was named among People Magazine's "Top 50 Most Eligible Bachelors" in 2002. In 2002, Mike visited Afghanistan as a representative of the National Guard. Mike's brother, Nicholas, is a Broadway performer. He is a son to a former Green Beret in the U.S. Army. He admires his parents for their passion for life and commitment to excellence in everything they do. He enjoys golf and riding his Harley-Davidson. Mike graduated from George Mason University in1997 with a degree in Health, Fitness and Recreation Management. Kohn is also a Certified Conditioning Specialist with the National Strength Professionals Association.
