- Shafik was born in Baghdad, Iraq and contracted Polio as a baby do to the vaccine. He moved to the United States in 2001 to finish school as an electronics engineer at Tucson Pima Community College. He developed a love for the sport of powerlifting in 1997 at age 24 in Baghdad
