Tracy Caulkins is a three-time Olympic gold medalist and former world record-holder in three swimming events. Born in Winona, Minnesota, she won 48 national championships throughout her career and set American records in all four strokes, as well as in the individual medley events. She burst onto the scene at age 15, winning five gold medals and the silver medal at the 1978 World Championships in West Berlin and received the James E. Sullivan Award for the nation’s most outstanding amateur athlete. She was the youngest recipient of the award in its storied history. At the Olympic Games Los Angeles 1984, Caulkins served as the captain of the U.S. women’s swim team. She won three gold medals at the Games, two in the same day. After the Games, Caulkins announced her retirement from Swimming, and graduated from the University of Florida while forgoing her senior year of eligibility. She was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1990.
