Eric Heiden is a five-time gold medalist in long track speedskating and is regarded as one of the greatest speed skaters of all time. The Wisconsin native dominated the men’s 500-meters, 1,000, 1,500, 5,000 and 10,000 at the Olympic Winter Games Lake Placid 1980 and set 15 world records throughout his Speedskating career. He also earned seven gold medals and one silver medal at world championship Speedskating events. After retiring from Speedskating he began cycling, where he won a national championship and competed in the 1986 Tour de France before pursuing a medical degree from Stanford Medical School. Heiden now practices as an orthopedic surgeon, specializing in sports medicine and working with many injured athletes.
