- Grew up near a flooded and frozen playground, where she would skate nearly every night in winter

Connie Carpenter Phinney is an Olympic gold medalist in cycling and was the youngest American woman to compete at an Olympic Winter Games. Born in Madison, Wisconsin, Carpenter-Phinney excelled in speedskating from a young age, competing at the Olympics Winter Games Sapporo 1972 when she was merely 14 years old. Following a Speedskating injury in 1976, Carpenter-Phinney began training on a bike, and started competing in Cycling races that same year. In 1976, 1977 and 1979, she won national titles in road and track pursuit Cycling. She would go on to win an Olympic gold in the Cycling road race at the Los Angeles 1984 Games. Carpenter-Phinney was inducted into the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame, as well as the U.S. BiCycling Hall of Fame.
