Asa Smith Bushnell III was the first commissioner of the Eastern College Athletic Conference from 1938-70 and secretary treasurer of the United States Olympic Committee from 1945-65. Graduating from Princeton University, Bushnell was not an athlete himself, but dedicated a career to athletic administration. He wrote and edited Olympic books, and sat on the USOC Board of Directors from 1945-70. Bushnell was awarded the Olympic Torch Award from the USOC in 1966 for his contributions to the Olympic Movement. He passed away on March 22, 1975. There is an award in Bushnell’s name that is given annually to the Ivy League football player of the year.
