2004 U.S. Olympic Women’s Softball Team

The 2004 U.S. Olympic Women’s Softball Team won gold at the Olympic Games Athens 2004, dominating the tournament with a perfect 9-0 record. Throughout the tournament, the U.S. outscored its opponents, 51-1, and broke 18 Olympic records. The pitching staff threw 55 and two thirds scoreless innings and earned a 0.12 staff earned run average. The team batted .343, and their nine-straight wins at the Games extended the U.S.’s streak to 79. Pictured on the cover of Sports Illustrated as “The Real Dream Team,” the team overcame the tragic loss of head coach Mike Candrea’s wife, Sue, just 10 days before the 2004 Games. Team members placed the letters “SC” on their helmets and wristbands, winning the gold medal in her honor.
