Steve Emt grew up playing multiple sports, earning varsity letters in football, baseball and basketball in high school. He was also a former U.S. Military Academy West Point cadet. He went on to walk on to the University of Connecticut men’s Basketball team. In 1995, at age 25, he was involved in a car accident that left him paralyzed. After becoming a teacher and high school Basketball coach, he discovered wheelchair curling in 2014 and quickly embraced the sport. Off the ice, Emt is a motivational speaker and author of “You D.E.C.I.D.E.”, a book on overcoming adversity. He holds a master’s degree in education and enjoys mentoring young athletes.
Emt made his Paralympic debut at the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Games, where Team USA finished 12th. Four years later, he competed at the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Games, helping the team improve to a fifth-place finish.
Emt has represented the U.S. in multiple world championships, including a fourth-place finish in 2021 (Beijing). He also competed in 2015 (fifth, Lohja, Finland), 2016 (sixth, Lucerne, Switzerland), 2017 (seventh, Gangneung, South Korea), and 2019 (11th, Stirling, Great Britain).
Emt tried multiple wheelchair sports before discovering wheelchair curling. He competed in wheelchair racing at the 2010 New York City Marathon. Once Emt discovered wheelchair curling at the Cape Cod Curling Club in Falmouth, Massachusetts, he developed his skills quickly. Within three months of being introduced to the sport, he earned a spot on Team USA.
