Rodgers

Scott Rodgers was introduced to the sport of wheelchair fencing in 1993.  At first, it was a good form of exercise, so he began practicing regularly. It wasn’t long before he learned he had a real talent for the sport.  He was soon climbing the national ranks and in 2004 he won a bronze medal in epee at the Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece.

Another of Rodgers' most memorable experiences was being selected to carry the Olympic Torch in his hometown of Old Hickory, Ga. during the Torch Relay prior to the 1996 Games in Atlanta. This honor came several weeks after his first national fencing tournament, where he won a silver medal.

After receiving his PhD from Georgia Tech in 2001, Rodgers took a job in San Diego, Calif., as a research engineer in the area of nano-photonics. In 2007, he received the Department of the Navy Top Scientists and Engineers Award for his efforts in integrated optics. He has received four patents for his work in nano-photonics, and has had his work published in a variety of peer reviewed journals.

Rodgers uses a wheelchair as a result of a spinal cord injury he suffered in a diving accident in 1991.
