- On Aug. 14, 1989, Severn was on duty with the U.S. Army Reserves at Camp Grayling in Michigan when he was struck by lightning
- The direct hit threw him 40 feet and caused internal and external injuries that left him as an incomplete quadriplegic who uses a wheelchair for daily activities
- He took a 14-year hiatus from sports before finding a passion for wheelchair rugby and eventually track & field
- He is the sports director for the Michigan Paralyzed Veterans of America
- Married Brenda Severn in 1994
- Has three children, Nicole, Kyle and Colton
- Enjoys playing wheelchair rugby and bowling
- Was inducted into the Michigan Athletes with Disabilities Hall of Fame as Athletes of the Year in 2007.
