On Aug. 14, 1989, Severn was on duty with the U.S. Army Reserves at Camp Grayling in Michigan when he was struck by lightning...The direct hit threw him 40 feet and caused internal and external injuries that left him as an incomplete quadriplegic who uses a wheelchair for daily activities...He took a 14-year hiatus from sports before finding a passion for wheelchair rugby and eventually track & field...He is the sports director for the Michigan Paralyzed Veterans of America...Married Brenda Severn in 1994...Has three children, Nicole, Kyle and Colton...Enjoys playing Wheelchair Rugby and bowling...Was inducted into the Michigan Athletes with Disabilities Hall of Fame as Athletes of the Year in 2007.Paralympic Experience
