Biographical Information

Ryan Crouser is a world-class shot putter, known for his strength, technique and consistency. Crouser has set multiple world records, with his outdoor shot put personal best of 23.56 meters in 2023. He also excels in indoor competitions, where his personal best of 23.38 meters, set in 2021, broke the longstanding indoor world record.

Crouser comes from a family of Olympic “throwers” including his father and both uncles, who competed in discus, javelin, and shot put, respectively. His two cousins are also javelin throwers. Crouser started his track and field career in middle school. He began setting national records during his sophomore year at the Sam Barlow High School and later attended the University of Texas at Austin. 

A supporter of children’s athletics, Crouser organized a donation event at the Salvation Army to celebrate his 29th birthday, asking all participants to donate athletics equipment for local kids. 

Olympic Highlights

Ryan Crouser became the first athlete ever to win three consecutive gold medals in shot put. His remarkable journey began at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, where he threw 22.52 meters to set an Olympic record and become the first American man to win a shot put gold medal since 2004.

Crouser's dominance continued at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, where he not only defended his title, but broke his own Olympic record with an incredible throw of 23.30 meters. He completed his historic triple crown at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, securing gold with a throw of 22.9 meters.

World Championship Highlights

Crouser's world championships career began with a silver medal at Doha 2019, where he achieved a personal best of 22.90 meters. In 2022, he won his first world title in Eugene with a throw of 22.94 meters, whereas earlier that year he earned silver at the world indoor championships. His most prolific world championship performance came in 2023 at Budapest, where he set a record of 23.51 meters to claim gold. He started 2024 by winning his first world indoor championship, adding another prestigious title to his storied collection.

U.S. Championship Highlights 

Ryan Crouser dominated at the national level with his first USA title in 2016, which set him on the path to Olympic success. He continued collecting national honors, winning titles in 2017 and 2019, while placing second in 2018. His most spectacular championship performance came at the 2021 U.S. Olympic trials, where he broke the outdoor world record with a throw of 23.37 meters. In indoor competition, he claimed victory at the 2019 USA indoor championships and secured his fourth national indoor title in 2024.

Early Career

Crouser's early career was marked by significant achievements, even as a junior athlete. He set multiple age-group records in shot put and discus. During his time at the University of Texas, Crouser competed primarily in the shot put event. He won multiple NCAA titles, including three NCAA outdoor championships in the shot put from 2014 to 2016. He set numerous records, including the NCAA all-time best in the shot put.
