- Doerr grew up sailing on Barnegat Bay in New Jersey, where all of his friends and family were avid sailors. He was forced to crew for his siblings at a young age. After a spinal cord injury in 1992, Doerr was able to reconnect to his past and has stated that Sailing has improved his health
- Son of Alphonsus and Esther Doerr
- Married to Joann Doerr
- Has four sisters, Carol, Debra, Mary and Susan, and one brother, Joe
- His career as a physician in plastic and reconstructive surgery is another one of his passions
- Coaches Bergen Catholic High School lacrosse
- He is an assistant professor of orthopedics at Seton Hall University
- Hobbies include lacrosse, skiing and coaching.
