A retired Marine Corps Corporal, Schaus had both legs amputated above the knee after being injured by an improvised explosive device while on a rural patrol in Afghanistan in June 2009. For his sacrifice in combat, Schaus received a Purple Heart. While undergoing rehabilitation at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, Schaus was introduced to
sled hockey, and he immediately found a passion for the sport. The determined veteran played two seasons with the USA Warriors, an organization that provides
ice hockey programs to injured service members. After a year on the U.S. National Development Sled Hockey Team from 2011-12, Schaus made his first U.S. National Sled Hockey Team for the 2012-13 season. He made his Paralympic Winter Games debut in Sochi, less than five years removed from being wounded while in service....Son of Cynthia and Paul Schaus…Hobbies include reading and riding his ATV…Idols include Canadian Ice Hockey players, Brad May and Adam Mair…Took part in the torch relay during the opening ceremony of the 2014 Warrior Games
