Meier wasn't a skier when he lost his right leg in a garden-tilling accident at age 8. However, he did start skiing the next winter and after graduating from high school, where wrestling was his favorite sport and skiing was a part time activity. He then joined the racing program at Afton Alps. He's a three-tracker - one leg and outriggers (skis on the bottom of his poles). After winning three medals at the 1992 Canadian Nationals, he was named to the ‘93 Ski Team. He picked off his first Paralympic medal the next year (bronze, slalom in Lillehammer).
Monte Meier nearly retired after the 2002 Paralympic Winter Games. But, feeling like he was still at the top of his game, Meier came back and competed in his fourth Games in Torino in 2006; Vancouver will mark his fifth Paralympic Winter Games; Vancouver marked his fifth Paralympic Winter Games.
Meier collected podium finishes in three out of four disciplines at the 2008 National Championships (Super G, giant slalom, slalom) and was a consistent presence in the top-15 during the 2007-2008 World Cup season.
