A box-to-box defensive midfielder who is as comfortable making hard tackles as he his starting attacks, the California native entered the league in 2007 as the number one draft pick of the expansion side Toronto FC. His impact was immediate, and after an impressive season, he was named MLS Rookie of the Year and called up to the U.S. National Team for games against Switzerland and South Africa.

  • In his first season as a professional, he made 25 appearances, all of them starts, and scored four goals for Toronto FC.
  • Earned his first cap for the U.S. during a game against Switzerland where he started in the center of midfield and played the full 90 minutes.
