Personal
Bathum began skiing at the age of nine, and just three years later discovered his passion for ski racing. Bathum has retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative eye condition that causes a loss of all peripheral vision; his vision began to worsen after high school. Driven by his friends’ success in racing, Bathum decided to dedicate his time and energy to racing by enrolling at Mission Ridge Racing Academy, one of the first skiing academies in the Northwest. He took a long hiatus from skiing after high school, as he attended college and spent several years living in Europe and Los Angeles. He returned to slopes in time to compete at the Paralympic Winter Games Vancouver 2010...Named Best Male Paralympian of the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games by the United States Olympic Committee...Skied at the junior national level as the number one seed while growing up...Son of Marjorie Bathum...Has two brothers, Randal and Dale...Grew up water skiing and
sailing on a lake...Hobbies include investing and studying the financial markets, following politics, reading and cooking...Was once a private pilot.
