Quick Facts
Donovan joined his first competitive soccer league at the age of 5. He began playing for the U.S. national program ten years later, and made his international debut with the U-17 team. Donovan would soon become the youngest player to be called to the U23 team. At the age of 17, he signed with the German club Bayer Leverkusen. However, he quickly realized Germany wasn't the place for him and spent much of his time training with the United States' U17 team. Donovan represented his nation at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and played a crucial part in helping the U.S. move past the first round of play for the first time in Olympic history. In 2001, he was loaned to the MLS' San Jose Earthquakes, where he led the team to two MLS Cup championships. Donovan has been playing with the Los Angeles Galaxy since 2005, and recently agreed to a four-year extension to his contract with the team. He led the Galaxy to an MLS championship in 2005, and was the team's captain for the 2007 and 2009 seasons. Donovan played on the national team for the 2006 World Cup, and is gearing up for the 2010 World Cup, where he is expected to play an integral part.
