Biographical Information
Lance Wheeler discovered curling during graduate school after a friend suggested he try the sport due to his background as a hockey player at St. John’s University in Minnesota. Born and raised in Golden, Colorado, Wheeler transitioned to curling in 2013, quickly finding a passion for the strategy and skill the sport demands.
In addition to his curling career, Wheeler works as a Staff Scientist at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden. Specializing in nanoparticles and photovoltaic window development, he balances his demanding career in renewable energy with competitive curling. He values curling for its inclusivity and the welcoming community at clubs worldwide. Wheeler is involved with the Denver Curling Club, a charitable organization committed to teaching, developing, promoting, and encouraging the spirit of curling. Outside of work and sport, he enjoys hiking, camping, exploring craft breweries and seeking out spicy foods.
Olympic Highlights
Lance Wheeler’s journey toward the Olympics began with a strong performance at the 2022 U.S. Olympic Trials, where his men’s team came close to earning a spot in the Beijing 2022 Olympic Games. Undeterred, Wheeler continues to pursue his Olympic aspirations. His mixed doubles team, Moores/Wheeler, secured a berth at the 2026 U.S. Mixed Doubles Trials after finishing with a 7-2 record at the 2024 pre-trials.
Early Career
Wheeler’s competitive spirit was honed during his high school and college years, where he played hockey and lacrosse. His time as a student-athlete at St. John’s University laid the foundation for his later success in curling, combining his experience on the ice with the strategic mindset he developed through his academic and professional pursuits.
