John Moffitt had a monster year in 2004 that climaxed with winning the mens long jump silver medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. Moffitt secured the silver medal with a personal best jump of 8.47m/27-9.50 in the fifth round of the competition. His performance gave the U.S. its first Olympic silver medal since Mike Powell won it in 1992. Also in 2004, Moffit became the first athlete in LSU history to sweep the NCAA indoor and outdoor long jump titles, winning the outdoor crown on his final jump at the 2004 NCAA Track and Field Championships. Moffitt, leading the field through five rounds of competition, was surpassed by South Carolina's Tony Allmond on the sixth jump. Needing to better Allmond's mark of 8.35m/27-4.75, the six-time All-American took to the runway and catapulted himself 8.40m/27-6.75 (+2.6 mps) to clinch the title. "I knew I had it in me to win," said Moffitt. "I just wanted to keep myself calm and not overdue it. I just took a deep breath and gave it my all."  Moffitt's second-best jump of the evening 8.29m/27-2.50 had a legal wind reading, which gave him the school record in the event. "That performance was huge," said LSU head coach Pat Henry. "We've decided to change John's name to 'Big Time' because he does it when it counts." Moffitt broke the 14-year old record of 8.24m/27-0.50 set by former All-American and NCAA champion Llewellyn Starks in 1990. Prior to his stint at LSU, Moffitt, spent two seasons at Barton County Community College under the guidance of coach Lance Brauman. A two-time All-American in both the long jump and the triple jump, he won the indoor long jump title at the 2000 NJCAA Championships with a leap of 25-2 and posted personal best marks of 7.97m/26-2 in the long jump and 16.43m/53-11 in the triple jump. He led Barton to both the indoor and outdoor NJCAA national titles in 2001 and 2002. As a prep standout and three-year letter-winner for coach Jimbo Murphy at Winnsboro High School, Moffitt won Louisiana Class 3A state titles in the long and triple jumps.
