Quick Facts
  • Joey is the son of Sylvia and John Cifelli
  • His mom is a Spanish teacher and dad is an iron worker
  • He has three older brothers: Johnny, Robby and Vinny (Joey says life at the Cifelli house was pretty wild growing up with four extremely competitive boys in the house, but that his brothers are his best friends.)
  • Joey’s favorite dive is 5154B (he spent a lot of time working on his twisting for 2016. He changed the way he wrapped his twist and spent weeks in the belts trying to get his arms in the right position)
  • He likes to watch a movie or listen to chill music between dives
  • For Joey, the hardest part about training is overcoming the mental aspect of the sport and says it is hard to picture himself beating some of the people he grew up idolizing
  • He has spent time with a sports psychologist to build his mental toughness
  • Away from diving, Joey enjoys playing other sports, spending time with his family and friends, travelling and going to music festivals
  • He is 50 percent Italian, 25 percent Mexican, 25 percent Cuban and speaks Spanish fairly well
