Biographical Information
Ilia Malinin began skating at age six, inspired by his parents, Tatyana Malinina and Roman Skornyakov, both former Olympic figure skaters for Uzbekistan. His early exposure to the sport laid a foundation for his meteoric rise in the figure skating world. Outside of skating, he enjoys fashion, skateboarding, video games, painting, drawing, writing stories and creating music. His creative pursuits and athletic discipline have made him a dynamic figure in the sport.
World Championship Highlights
Malinin earned a bronze medal at the 2023 ISU Figure Skating World Championships, showcasing his rapid rise in senior competition. He followed by placing first at the 2024 event, highlighting his technical mastery and solidifying his position as a leading figure in men’s singles skating. He then defended his gold medal in 2025, becoming the first American skater to win back-to-back titles since Nathan Chen's three-peat from 2018-2021.
U.S. Championship Highlights
Malinin has had great success in national competitions, winning multiple U.S. champion titles. At the 2024 Prevagen U.S. Figure Skating Championships, he won gold, beating the rest of the competitors with a margin of nearly 30 points. His dominance at the national level began early, winning the intermediate title in 2017 and steadily climbing the ranks with notable finishes in novice and junior categories.
Early Career
Malinin’s competitive journey began at an early age, winning his first U.S. juvenile title in 2016. By 2019, he had claimed a bronze medal at the novice level at the U.S. Championships, establishing himself as a future star. His success in junior competitions, including gold at the 2022 World Junior Championships, paved the way for his transition to senior-level dominance.
