Smart graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School in 1997, where she was a member of the fencing team all four years. Graduated from Barnard College of Columbia University in 2001, with a degree in Economic History. She competed in fencing all four years of college and was named to the All Ivy League team. Favorite movie is Gladiator and favorite television show is Sex and the City. Her role model is her mother because she is the epitome of a strong willed, smart and focused woman. Smart is a very passionate and extremely determined athlete. Her parents are the late Thomas Smart and Audrey Smart. She has one brother, Keeth, who is also an elite level fencer. Erinn's father took her to the Peter Westbrook Foundation's first-ever fencing class after he read about Westbrook in the paper. Keeth followed about six monhths later. The Westbrook Foundation, a non-profit founded by six-time Olympian Peter Westbrook to mentor inner-city kids through the sport of fencing. Her brother, Keeth, competed at the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games and will be joining her in Beijing as a member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team. In 2003, he became the first U.S. Fencer ever to be ranked No. 1 in the World after winning the silver medal at the World Cup competition in Athens, Greece. He also participated on the 1999 Pan American Games team. Erinn was a competitive tennis player when she was younger. She wears something red at every tournament for luck. She currently wears a bracelet she got at a competition in China ad at least one other red piece of clothing. Erinn worked for Celine, a French fashion company, before giving up her job to train full-time for the 2004 Olympics.
