As a black female with a disability, a mental health advocate, and a member of the LGBT+ community, Jaleen Roberts uses her platform to be a catalyst for awareness and change and to show other people that they can succeed despite adversity
A favorite quote that speaks to Jaleen is by Henry van Dyke, “Some succeed because they are destined to, but most succeed because they are determined to.” Having been born with cerebral, a condition that impairs muscle strength and coordination caused by a stroke at birth, Jaleen wasn’t destined to succeed but by getting out of her comfort zone and displaying resiliency, she was able to reach one of the highest points of achievement
Mental illness is a lifelong battle and Roberts, 24, continues to find her way back to the surface after getting held down by a wave of mental health struggles. As a mental health advocate, she serves as voice for anyone suffering, in hopes of ending the stigma of mental illness within the athletic community. By sharing her story, she hopes to encourage other athletes to reach out and speak up when they are in times of need
