Soule

Quick Facts

• Soule is a retired United States Army Specialist (E-4). Following the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, Soule decided he wanted to give back to his country and joined the Army. Soon after basic training, he was deployed to Afghanistan. An IED detonated next to Soule's Humvee, resulting in a double leg amputation. Soule then spent a few years in rehabilitation and soon began looking for options that would keep him active. As a lifelong athlete with plenty of ambition, he attended a cross-country recruitment camp in Sun Valley, Idaho, in 2005. Even though he had no previous experience with skiing, he caught on quickly and was hooked on the sport. At his first Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver in 2010, Soule won bronze, becoming the first U.S. biathlete to win a Paralympic medal. He spent two years away from competition following Vancouver to study gunsmithing and returned to competition in late 2012. He continued to succeed with Team USA, securing a spot on the 2014 U.S. Paralympic Team in Sochi and making strong world cup and world championship runs in the later seasons
