At 3 years old, Johnson followed his sister, Alissa, off a 20-meter ski jump with no helmet and landed, thus beginning his career in ski jumping. His sister now jumps for the Sports Foundation Ski Club and in the U.S. women's circuit. His father, Alan, was the head coach for the U.S. Nordic Combined team (1988-1992), program director for U.S. Nordic Combined team (1992-1995) and head coach for U.S. Ski Jumping team (1995-1996). He studies Business Administration and Hospitality at DeVry University.
In his free time, he enjoys hiking, swimming, tennis, soccer and water skiing.
