Biographical Information
Alex Morgan is a celebrated figure in U.S. women's soccer and plays as a striker for the San Diego Wave FC in the National Women’s Soccer League. Morgan grew up a multi-sport athlete and took up Soccer at an early age with the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO), where her father was one of her first coaches. She attended Diamond Bar High School and University of California, Berkeley where she played for the California Golden Bears.
Morgan has collected many honors and delivered remarkable performances over the years, including her unforgettable 123rd-minute goal in the semifinal of the Olympic Games London 2012 against Canada. At just 22 years old, Morgan made history as the youngest player in the U.S. national for the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup. In 2012, she further distinguished herself by becoming the youngest U.S. player to score 20 goals in a single season.
Morgan’s performance won her the title “U.S. Soccer Female Athlete of the Year” and she landed her as a finalist for the “FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year” in 2013. With two FIFA Women’s World Cup titles under her belt in 2015 and 2019, Alex Morgan is known as one of the greatest American soccer players of all time.
An advocate for equality in the athletic world, she launched the Alex Morgan Foundation in 2023 with the goal of creating equity and opportunity for young women in athletics. She’s also a practicing vegan and the New York Times bestselling author of the series The Kicks.
Olympic Highlights
During the London 2012 Olympic Games, Alex Morgan's iconic goal in the 123rd minute during the semifinal against Canada secured the victory for the U.S. women’s national team, propelling them to the gold-medal match.
Named to the USWNT 18-player roster for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Morgan scored a goal in the opening match against New Zealand.
During the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Morgan supported the team in clinching the bronze medal.
World Cup Highlights
In 2008, Morgan played a crucial role in the U.S. team's success at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup, leading them to a gold-medal victory.
During the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Morgan's performance earned her widespread recognition as the first player to ever record a goal and an assist in a world cup final, despite being the youngest player on the team.
Morgan played and started in all seven world cup final matches in 2015, scored a goal and won several penalties. In 2019, she returned to the world cup to successfully defend her team’s title.

Morgan’s soccer career was in her sights from a young age. However, her participation in the Olympic Development Program is what she accredits as the foundation of her professional athletic career.
Club Career (2011 - 2024)
Alex Morgan began her professional career with the Western New York Flash in 2011, where she was the first overall pick in the WPS Draft. In 2012, Morgan joined the Seattle Sounders Women. Transitioning to the Portland Thorns FC in 2013 (to 2015), Alex Morgan and Christine Sinclair were the top scorers that year, each securing 8 goals during the season.
Joining the Orlando Pride in 2016, Morgan contributed four goals in 15 appearances. During her brief stint with Lyon in 2017, she scored five goals in eight regular-season appearances, contributing to the team's league title and French Cup victory. Her signing with Tottenham Hotspur in 2020 was marked by her first goal for the club in a 3–1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion. Returning to Orlando Pride in 2021, she made an impactful start by scoring in each of the first four games of the regular season and earning the NWSL Player of the Month title for May 2021.
Morgan signed with San Diego Wave FC in 2022, scoring the winning goal in the 2024 Challenge Cup and continuing her legacy as a dynamic force in women's soccer.
In September 2024, Alex Morgan announced her retirement from professional soccer.
Early Career
At 14, Morgan joined Cypress Elite, winning several championships and perfecting her skills. During her high school career, she was known for her speed and agility and was named All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Morgan also participated in the Olympic Development Program, which she credited with her development as a player. In 2006, at 17, she joined the United States under-20 women's national soccer team but suffered an ACL injury, delaying her return to the team until 2008.
College Career (2007 - 2010)
During her college career, Morgan made a significant impact on the team, leading them to the final of the NCAA tournament within four years. Morgan became the first Golden Bear to reach the top-three finalist list for the prestigious Hermann Trophy. She was also one of the four finalists for the Honda Sports Award.
By the end of her college career, Morgan earned a ranking of third in the history of the California Golden Bears with 45 goals and 106 points.
