Three Americans Earn Silver Medals On Day 3 At Para-Cycling Track World Championships

Aaron Keith poses with his silver medal following the 3-kilometer individual pursuit MC1 at the 2022 UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships on Oct. 22, 2022 in Montigny-le-Bretonneux, France.

U.S. cyclists hauled in four more medals on the third night of the 2022 UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships, and three of those medals could’ve been gold with just a few more fractions of a second.
The thrilling Saturday night action in Montigny-le-Bretonneux, France, included two-time 2016 Paralympic medalist Samantha Bosco, 2020 Paralympic medalist Aaron Keith and two-time Paralympian Chris Murphy earning silver medals. Clara Brown, a 2020 Paralympian, won a bronze medal.
The U.S. has won eight medals at the world championships with one night of sprint racing left. All three silver-medal finishes were extremely close, with Bosco and Keith holding leads until the very end of their races.
Keith was first in qualifying in the 3-kilometer individual pursuit MC1. He was in good position in the final, holding a lead over Ricardo Ten Argiles of Spain until the final stretch of the race. Ten Argiles was able to rally and edge Keith by just .054 seconds. The runner-up finish gave Keith his second medal of the world championships, marking the most medals he has won at a track world championship and equaling the two medals he won at this year’s road world championships.
“I’m pretty stoked that this is the best I’ve done,” said Keith, who has also clinched a silver medal in the four-event omnium. “To come to a track like this and experience it, to understand the way the curves of the track are, the gearing and equipment, and all the things that will factor into training and preparing.”
Murphy was also first overall after his qualifying heat in the 1K time trial MC5. He was beaten by .287 seconds in the final by Blaine Hunt of Great Britain but was pleased overall with his performance.
“I’m really proud of myself,” Murphy said. “I gave it everything I had today. It’s always amazing to win a medal, I never take it for granted.”
Bosco, who has won a combined four world medals this year in track and road, enjoyed a lead for much of the early stages of the 10K scratch WC4. The pack caught up to her, but Bosco was able to hold them off until the finish when she was beaten at the line by Australia’s Emily Petricola. Like Keith, Bosco clinched a silver medal in omnium with three second-place finishes and a third-place finish.
“I don’t like silver, I don’t like second place, and I’m going to use that motivation as fuel and come back even stronger,” Bosco said.
Brown staged a comeback in earning bronze in the 3K individual pursuit WC3. She was able to pick up her pace in the final laps to race her way onto the podium. Brown also clinched a bronze medal in omnium.
