Team USA’s Nike Podium Outfits To Bring Icy Blue Look, Versatile Function

Nike unveils its Team USA collection for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 on Jan. 21, 2022.

As U.S. athletes stand on the podium to receive their medals at the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Beijing 2022, they’ll do so in a Nike-designed wardrobe that has an icy look while being versatile and accessible to all competitors.

Plus, the gear has been created using some of the most cutting-edge sustainability practices.

Team USA and Nike unveiled Friday the ensembles those lucky enough to win Olympic hardware next month will be donning from head to toe.

The all-blue garb — light-blue hooded jackets with slightly dark-blue pockets and pants — have an Olympic or Paralympic patch on the left chest and the Nike Swoosh on the right chest. On the back is a vertical USA logo that reads the same regardless of view with an American flag at the top.

Nike used the essence of its FlyEase footwear technology and applied it to features throughout the garments to account for use by Olympians and Paralympians in the cold temperatures.

An oversized zipper pull helps athletes of all dexterities get in and out of the jackets with ease. Magnetic closures help the zippers come together at the base.

Pockets are secured with fish-trap technology to secure phones, wallets, keys and other personal items without the need for a zipper. The jackets also have side-vent zippers that allow for extra flexibility, particularly for wheelchair athletes.

A quick-release magnetic buckle, which Nike calls a “first-of-its-kind” feature, and oversized zipper pull highlight the trail pants. The Gaiadome boot has a back-entry zipper with toggle lacing system.

Under the jacket, athletes have a quarter-zip sweater, also light blue, with the same front patches as the jacket.

The materials used to make the outfits also hit two key points: top materials for better performance, as well as sustainability.

Using its Advanced Functional Innovative Technologies system, Nike was able to utilize significant amounts of recycled fibers in the gear. The jackets include 75 percent recycled polyester and nylon fibers, while the composite material on the outer shell has 100 percent recycled polyester fabric.

In addition, a new dye/wash process used on many of the products cut down on the chemical impact compared to traditional dyeing methods while resulting in an aged look and soft feel.
