Women's Rugby Team Finishes Second In Return To Action

Great Britain got the better of the U.S. women’s rugby team in Tokyo in the quarterfinals, and did so again Sunday in Vancouver in the final of the Fast Four invitational tournament.
The only two losses for the U.S. women on the weekend came to Great Britain, who finished fourth at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. In Vancouver, Team USA started out 2-0 in pool play before suffering a 41-12 loss to the British, then beat Canada for a second time to book a place in the final. A 19-12 halftime score turned into a 34-12 victory for Great Britain. Summer Harris-Jones and Jaz Gray each scored a try for the U.S.
“From game one to game five there was a tremendous growth and we are really happy with that,” said Team USA’s Stephanie Rovetti. “We have a couple of things we gotta adjust and then I think we'll be good to go for next week.”
The first of two such tournaments, the Fast Four takes the place of this year’s World Rugby Sevens Series competition. A champion will be crowned at next weekend’s event in Edmonton, Alberta, bringing an end to the abbreviated calendar necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic. At the close of the most recent Sevens Series in 2019-20, the U.S. women sat in fifth place when the rest of the season was cancelled.
On the men’s side, the U.S. men took part in the Canada Sevens, held alongside the Fast Four, and won the fifth-place match over Canada. Four different players scored a try for Team USA. Both the men’s and women’s teams will be back in action next weekend at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton.
