Four U.S. Women’s Golfers Clinch Tokyo Qualification

Nelly Korda didn’t need to go out and win the Women’s PGA Championship this past weekend to earn an Olympic berth, but in doing so she left little doubt as to why she’s No. 1 in the world and one of four U.S. women to qualify for this summer’s Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Korda joins her sister Jessica, Danielle Kang and returning Olympian Lexi Thompson as the top four U.S. women in the Olympic Golf Ranking. Nelly Korda, Kang and Thompson all rank in the top 10 in the world while Jessica Korda sits just outside in 13th. The rankings are based on the Women’s World Golf Rankings and closed on June 28th following the conclusion of the Women’s PGA.
Nelly Korda, who will turn 23 during the Games, won the first major of her career but has two other wins on tour in 2021. One came the week prior. The PGA Championship win boosted her to No. 1 in the world, making her the first American atop the rankings since Stacy Lewis in 2014. 
Kang, 28, is No. 5 in the rankings and finish tied for fifth at the Women’s PGA. Kang previously won the same tournament in 2017, the lone major win of her career. Kang has five tour titles in total.
Thompson, 26, is the lone returning Olympian among the quartet. The 2014 ANA Inspiration winner did not medal in Rio but finished in a tie for seventh, just three strokes back of winner Ariya Jutanugarn of Thailand. Thompson already confirmed on Twitter Monday that she intends to participate in Tokyo.
The elder Korda, 28, is a six-time winner on tour. She has one win in 2021, coming in January at the Diamond Resorts Tour of Champions when she bested Kang in a playoff. The Kordas would not only have each other for company in Tokyo but also could be joined by their brother Sebastian in men’s tennis.
