Brittany Bowe Wins Second And Final 1,500-Meter World Cup Of 2021, Winning Title

Two events, two wins. And just like that, Brittany Bowe captured her third world cup speedskating title at 1,500 meters.
The brief world cup season concludes Sunday from Heerenveen, Netherlands, but Bowe’s 1,500-meter season finished Saturday as she won the second of both events on the calendar, with the first coming at the same site last weekend. Bowe turned in a 1:53.455, good enough to best Antoinette de Jong of the Netherlands by .35 seconds. Dutch skater Ireen Wüst ran third. The world cup standings finished in the same order.
Bowe’s win on Jan. 23 was her first at 1,500 meters since the 2018-19 season, a season in which she won her second world cup title at the distance. After a ninth-place finish in 2019-20, Bowe rededicated herself to the 1,500, an event in which she’s previously won a world championship and competed in at two Olympic Winter Games. Bowe’s three world cup overall titles in the 1,500 are tied for the second most all time among women. Only Germany’s Gunda Niemann, who won nine from 1990 to 2000, has more.
Bowe later took to the ice in the 500-meter, finishing 10th.
Also taking place Saturday was mass start, with American Joey Mantia finishing just off the podium in fourth.
The world cup season concludes on Sunday with the men’s and women’s 500 and 1,000, women’s 3,000 and men’s 5,000.
