With 1-2 Finish, Jessie Diggins And Rosie Brennan Move To 1-2 In Tour De Ski Standings

Jessie Diggins and Rosie Brennan raced to a 1-2 finish in a 10-kilometer freestyle pursuit Sunday in Val Müstair, Switzerland, moving them to first and second in the Tour de Ski standings.
Diggins earned her third podium finish through the first three stages of the prestigious 10-day, eight-stage competition, while overall world cup leader Brennan has been among the top-5 in each race so far. Diggins opened the competition by taking third in a freestyle sprint on Friday before finishing third in a 10K classic mass start on Saturday. Brennan finished fifth in the opening freestyle sprint and fourth in the mass start. (Both initially finished one spot higher on Friday but were moved back when another skier successfully appealed her disqualification.)
On Sunday the two American Olympians entered the halfway point in a tight four-person lead pack before breaking away. Diggins finished in 26:54.1, with Brennan 5.6 seconds behind her. Sweden’s Frida Karlsson was third, 10.7 seconds behind Diggins. It was the first time U.S. cross-country skiers finished 1-2 in a world cup race.
Diggins now leads the Tour de Ski standings with a combined time of 59.36.0, with Brennan five seconds back and Karlsson five seconds behind Brennan.
Brennan’s result also maintained her overall world cup lead, while Diggins moved up two spots to fifth.
Diggins, a 2018 Olympic champion, now has eight world cup wins in her career. Her most recent came in February 2019. She’s the only American to have finished on the overall podium at the Tour de Ski, having placed third in 2018.
It’s been a dream start to the season for Brennan, who recorded back-to-back wins in December in Davos, Switzerland, and now has four podium finishes on the season. A 2018 Olympian, she is just the second American to wear the yellow bib as overall world cup leader, following Sadie Maubet Bjornsen last year.
Meanwhile the men raced a 15K freestyle pursuit Sunday, with Gus Schumacher posting the best U.S. finish at 32nd. He is also the top American man in the series standings, also ranking 32nd.
The Tour de Ski continues Tuesday in Toblach, Italy, before eventually ending Jan. 10 in Val di Fiemme, Italy.
