Teresa Edwards is one of the most decorated players in the history of the U.S. national basketball team. The Cairo, Georgia, native grew up with four younger brothers and became the first member of her family to go to college when she attended the University of Georgia. As an All-American, Edwards took her team to the NCAA Women’s Final Four twice and earned a roster spot on the U.S. Olympic team, winning the gold medal at the Olympic Games Los Angeles 1984, while still in school. The point guard then spent nine years playing professionally abroad in both Europe and Japan due to the lack of opportunity for female professional Basketball players in the United States. Edwards co-captained the 1988 U.S. Olympic Women's Basketball Team that won gold at the Seoul Games. The U.S. women captured the bronze medal at the Barcelona 1992 Games, which motivated her to continue playing on the U.S. women's national team. Edwards led the team in assists and points in the gold-medal game at the Olympic Games Atlanta 1996, and captured gold again four years later at the Sydney 2000 Games. She was named 1996’s USA Basketball Player of the Year and played professional Basketball in the United States with the American Basketball League before winning her fourth gold medal in 2000. The five-time Olympian guided her American teammates to gold medals in 14 of 18 major international tournaments between 1981-2000. She was also the youngest and oldest Basketball player to win an Olympic gold medal during her career.
