Ray Ewry won a total of eight Olympic gold medals in individual events to become one of the best jumpers the sport has ever seen. Despite being orphaned at the age of 5 and contracting polio as a child, Ewry started jumping in an effort to regain the use of his legs. The Lafayette, Indiana, native played football and captained the track team at Purdue University, where he broke world records in standing high jump, standing long jump and standing triple jump. Ewry claimed three gold medals at the Olympic Games Paris 1900, another three at the St. Louis 1904 Games and two more at the London Games in 1908. He passed away in 1937 on Long Island, New York.
