The stage is set for the U.S. men's gymnastics team on Saturday night. A five-person squad will be announced, revealing the athletes who have secured their spots on Team USA's world championships team.
Among the top contenders are Olympian Yul Moldauer, NCAA team and vault champion Asher Hong, and Fred Richard, an NCAA high bar and parallel bar champion who is no stranger to putting the spotlight on men's gymnastics through his social media accounts.
Their message to fans is clear: U.S. men's gymnastics is coming for the podium.
“When it came to getting noticed, I realized we’re not noticed. That’s why I ran so hard into social media."
"This year, we are on the come up. We are shooting for that podium."
“If you want to be the biggest in your sport, other sports have to know about you.”
"When you look at other Olympians in other sports, most of their backgrounds were, 'I did gymnastics.' So I think gymnastics brings a huge fundamental of just knowing your body but also builds a huge community."
"I never want to see the NCAA not be a part of gymnastics. It’s one of the best things for this sport. It’s so important for Team USA to have the NCAA for the elite side."
"One of the best advantages we have is going to an NCAA program. You don’t see that with other countries."
"A lot of the men’s gymnasts come from the NCAA and have that energy to bring. If we could bring that same energy for the crowd, we could make a great show."
"I’m a strong believer of once you watch one meet, you’re going to come and want to watch more."
"Whoever is going to follow us and be the true fans are really going to see something special with Team USA and the men’s program."
"It’s like watching your first city team win an NBA championship or a Superbowl. That’s the spotlight we’re in right now."
"It’s an amazing story for everyone to see. It would be a greater story if all the U.S. could get behind us before that happened and, all of us together, could celebrate that win."
